There are hundreds of thousands of homes around the country that are in desperate need of someone with incredible vision and a hefty construction budget to take on their renovation. From awkward layouts, severely outdated interiors, or simply the degradation and wear and tear that take a toll on a home over time, these homes are ready for a major makeover.
While even the smallest home renovation projects can be taxing, being willing to take on a complete gut job takes a certain amount of patience, flexibility, creativity, and inner strength to survive the project. And, as with any project, there is no guarantee of how the results will turn out; this oftentimes leaves otherwise clueless homeowners at the mercy of their contractors and architects. However, the benefits often outweigh the risks, and these intrepid homeowners are able to transform their homes from hovels into true showpieces.
The following eight renovations are just a small sample of some of the truly astonishing home makeovers that have been completed in recent years. With ingenuity, vision, and an open checkbook these homeowners have each done something truly spectacular with their given spaces.
Manhattan 425 Square Foot Microloft
Enclosed at the top of a six story brownstone in New York City’s Upper West Side, the architects on this project were faced with two major tasks: taking full advantage of the 25-feet of vertical space in the apartment and opening up the closed-off layout. By removing walls, adding hidden storage, and taking advantage of every previously-unused nook and cranny, they were able to create an open and modern three story living space. With separate levels for the kitchen, living, and bedroom spaces, as well as a small bathroom tucked under the stairs, this microloft feels much more spacious than its dainty 425 square feet let on.
