It’s an age old question: is it possible to make money just by being popular on the internet?
For many of YouTube’s hottest stars, the answer is yes. By amassing followers and subscribers and consistently uploading interesting content for their viewers, many YouTube personalities have been able to translate their internet fame into real-world earnings. The question remains: how do they do it?
The answer is in advertising. For every 1000 times an advertisement plays before a video or a pop-up ad appears in the middle of content, YouTube is typically paid between $20 and $25; this is known as CPM. When a YouTube channel has amassed enough subscribers, they can apply to be a partner, meaning they earn a certain percentage of the CPM fees – partners are usually given 45% of the CPM fee.
While it might not seem like much, channels with hundreds of thousands of followers – and even more views per video – are able to quickly and easily earn incredible paychecks just by uploading content. Here are nine YouTube personalities who have translated their online success into cold, hard cash.
Estimated Annual Earnings: $7 million
Number of Views: 5.4 billion
